"You can take people as far as they will go, but you cannot take them as far as you would like them to go."
- Jeannette Rankin, 1968

Suffragist, pacifist and tireless advocate for social reform, Jeannette Rankin was the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress, and the only member of Congress to vote against U.S. entry into both world wars. She worked for the cause of women and children during the reform decades of the early 20th century. As a lifelong pacifist, she served as a lobbyist for the Women's Peace Union and was a representative for the National Council for the Prevention of War. Through her activities as a lobbyist before, during and after her terms in Congress, and her commitment to peace and governmental reform, she is rightly called "America's Conscience". Jeannette Rankin was a daughter, sister, congresswoman, and reformer whose immense love for humanity made her not only a hero of peace, but a model of loyalty and a symbol of hope.

"Small use it will be to save democracy for the race if we cannot save the race for democracy."
- Jeannette Rankin, 1918
