"We started up into the mountains over the new road
and for several days we made such slow progress that
we could look back to the last night's camp smoke.
The men worked hard to get the first wagon over the
road. The weather was changeable, a few inches of snow
falling every night. I speak of this, for it made it
wet and sloppy looking over a campfire ... we were two
long weary weeks getting to the South Park. I shall never
forget how beautiful the park looked when I first
beheld it. The sun was just setting its beautiful rays
reflected back, tinging the whole heavens with crimson
and yellow clouds. It looked like a cultivated field with
rivulets running through and herds of antelope, and I beheld
and wondered and exclaimed, 'Who made this, O God?' "

to being the first woman in California Gulch.
