"Few women were more thrifty or industrious.
Not many men had more courage, common sense, or initiative, especially in a crisis."
- Morning Chronicle, Manhattan, Kansas about Augusta Tabor, 1895

Often called the First Lady of Leadville, Augusta Tabor is a well-known name on the Colorado mining frontier. Though many consider her a footnote to the more well known and scandalous saga of Silver Baron Horace Tabor and Baby Doe, Augusta Tabor stands alone as a pioneering businesswoman with a heart of gold and a generosity that is legend. A wife, a mother, and one of the first women to come west in the Pike's Peak gold rush, Augusta's story is the real story of the Tabors - one of adventure and discovery in the magnificent Rocky Mountains.

"We started up into the mountains over the new road and for several days we made such slow progress that we could look back to the last night's camp smoke. The men worked hard to get the first wagon over the road. The weather was changeable, a few inches of snow falling every night. I speak of this, for it made it wet and sloppy looking over a campfire ... we were two long weary weeks getting to the South Park. I shall never forget how beautiful the park looked when I first beheld it. The sun was just setting its beautiful rays reflected back, tinging the whole heavens with crimson and yellow clouds. It looked like a cultivated field with rivulets running through and herds of antelope, and I beheld and wondered and exclaimed, 'Who made this, O God?' " - Augusta Tabor's diary 1860, on her journey to being the first woman in California Gulch.
