"We are no longer surprised but always in awe of what the artists bring
out in our students. Sometimes it's simply risking involvement, but often
it's a time when thoughtful production occurs and the faculty and community
are inspired and encouraged by our youth." - Educator, Idalia School,
Idalia, CO
When I portray historic characters, students inevitably ask, "Is that a real person? Did that person really live?" In an age of illusion and distorted depictions of "reality", the stories of real people who faced and overcame real challenges mean a lot to young audiences. History tells us not only what happened, it tells us who we are. The courage, the determination, the creativity expressed in another life are the same qualities that we possess - the same qualities that we all need to face our challenges, just like those real people faced theirs.
In residencies and workshops, students are encouraged to find the real stories, from our collective history or from their own families, to explore personal expression and the "what ifs" of the human experience, to find their own voice. Students learn to let stories speak to them as they tap into critical thinking processes. Residencies and workshops are lively, interactive and integrate diverse learning styles and presentation skills to help students keep the stories alive.
All programs satisfy the Colorado Model Standards for History and for Theater.
